Footage shows adult orcas coordinating to hold and release sunfish before striking them, potentially to portion food for juveniles or as a social activity.The behaviour, observed in 2024 and 2025 events, challenges previous assumptions about orca hunting tactics.Dr.Kathryn Ayres notes that while the action may serve practical purposes like food distribution, it could also be recreational.Sunfish, which can weigh up to two metric tons, are vulnerable when surfacing.The study highlights orcas' complex social and cooperative behaviours, offering new insights into their ecological role.Further observations are needed to determine if this technique is widespread among orca populations.
