Ottery firefighters assist ill driver and help save Eersterivier resident’s life

An Eersterivier resident, Nathan Gardiner, has publicly expressed deep gratitude to firefighters from Ottery Fire Station after they assisted him during a serious medical emergency while he was driving colleagues to work.

According to Gardiner, he began experiencing severe nausea and repeated vomiting in the early hours of 22 May, which progressively worsened as he prepared for his morning commute.Despite feeling unwell, he decided to proceed with his duties as he was responsible for transporting colleagues through a lift club arrangement. While driving along Lansdowne Road near Wetton Circle, his condition deteriorated significantly. He became feverish, disoriented, and weak, eventually pulling over after vomiting again and noticing his vision becoming blurry. At that moment, Officer Pamela Zotwa, who was on her way to work, noticed his distress and immediately stepped in to assist.

She introduced herself calmly, took control of the situation, and drove his vehicle to safely drop off his passengers at their workplaces while monitoring his condition and keeping him calm.Gardiner described how Officer Zotwa’s professionalism and compassion were crucial in ensuring he received timely help. She then transported him to the fire station, where Officer Craig Apollis took over his care.

Apollis reportedly checked his vital signs, assessed his condition thoroughly, and ensured he received appropriate medical attention before continuing with his own recovery process. Both officers were praised for their quick thinking, empathy, and dedication.

The incident was later acknowledged by Mayco member for Safety and Security, JP Smith, who commended the firefighters for their exceptional service and compassion.

Gardiner concluded that the officers’ actions may have saved his life, highlighting their willingness to go beyond their normal duties to assist a stranger in distress.
