In Motherwell, a township outside Gqeberha, residents have endured months of raw sewage flooding streets and yards, with the municipality facing criticism for delayed repairs.

Lindela Mzileni, a resident of Mnenga Street, reported that her yard has been flooded for two months, a problem that has worsened over the past decade.

The sewage spills, often reaching walls and covering parts of Nkume Street, have been attributed to blockages caused by foreign objects like stones, rags, plastic, and sand entering the sewer network.

Ward councillor Lubabalo Ludwabe explained that repairs were delayed due to a lack of proper equipment, while the municipality acknowledged the issue as a result of neglected infrastructure.Despite some progress, many areas remain flooded, with a large truck stationed at a pump station to bypass the affected pipes.

The situation underscores systemic failures in municipal waste management and the urgent need for infrastructure upgrades to prevent recurring crises.
