Peter Obi accepts NDC presidential nomination, calls for urgent action on hunger and reforms in Nigeria

Peter Obi has officially accepted the presidential ticket of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Abuja, where he used the opportunity to strongly criticise Nigeria’s current socio-economic condition, especially its ranking among the world’s hungriest nations.

He declared that Nigeria has no justification to be listed among countries facing severe hunger, stressing that with proper leadership and efficient resource management, the country can do better.Obi reaffirmed his popular slogan that “a New Nigeria is Possible,” while outlining a broad reform agenda if elected president.

He promised to focus on job creation, economic transformation, security improvement, and ending widespread hunger through targeted investments in agriculture, infrastructure, and human capital development.

On energy, he pledged to boost Nigeria’s electricity generation and distribution by at least 10,000 megawatts within four years, noting that the country currently struggles with about 4,000 megawatts for over 200 million people. He compared this with countries like South Africa and Egypt, which generate over 40,000 megawatts despite smaller populations.

In healthcare, he promised to raise insurance coverage from about 10 per cent to over 20 per cent and increase health spending to at least 10 per cent of GDP, while ensuring every political ward has a functional primary healthcare centre. On education, he emphasised investment in teachers, vocational training, and technology to strengthen human capital. He also highlighted the worsening food crisis, warning that over 35 million Nigerians may face acute hunger.Party leaders, including Sen.Seriake Dickson and Sen.Moses Cleopas, described his nomination as a step towards offering Nigerians a credible alternative ahead of 2027.Obi also promised support for MSMEs through tax incentives and access to affordable credit.
