AFP monitors 36 Chinese vessels in key West Philippine Sea areas
The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) partnered with the United States Indo-Pacific Command (USINDOPACOM) in a bilateral Maritime Cooperative Activity (MCA) near Bajo de Masinloc in the West Philippine Sea from May 26 to 30.This marked the third MCA between the Philippines and the US, aimed at reinforcing defense cooperation.
The exercise featured Philippine assets like the BRP Antonio Luna (FFG-15), AW109 helicopter, FA-50 fighter jet, Sokol aircraft, and the PCG's BRP Melchora Aquino (MRRV-9702).The US participated with the USCGC Midgett (WMSL-757) and an MH-65 helicopter.
During the five-day drills, both forces conducted Search and Rescue (SAR), Visit, Board, Search and Seizure (VBSS), Maritime Law Enforcement Training, Rotary Wing Deck Landing Qualifications (DLQ), Vertical Replenishment (VERTREP), and Communication Exercises (COMMEX).Highlights included the AW109 helicopter approaching the USCGC Midgett for VERTREP and deck landing qualifications aboard the BRP Antonio Luna.
The exercise reinforces the 75-year-old Mutual Defense Treaty (MDT) between the Philippines and the US, which obligates both nations to support each other in the event of armed attacks in the Pacific region.The MCA demonstrates continued commitment to regional security amid rising tensions in the Indo-Pacific.
