Philippines and United States Conclude Fourth Maritime Cooperative Activity in the West Philippine Sea for 2026
MANILA, Philippines — Philippine authorities have reported the presence of a new Chinese research vessel near Panatag Shoal (also known as Scarborough Shoal) shortly after the removal of a controversial floating platform previously observed in the area.
During a maritime domain awareness flight conducted by the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), officials documented the Chinese research vessel Tong Ji operating approximately 1.2 kilometers southeast of the shoal.
The patrol also recorded the presence of two China Coast Guard vessels, three Chinese maritime militia vessels, and several small boats within and around the lagoon.
According to PCG spokesperson Rear Admiral Jay Tarriela, the Chinese ships had not been observed in the same positions during the previous day's patrol, suggesting they arrived overnight.
The PCG expressed concern over the activities of the Tong Ji, describing it as a modern scientific research vessel capable of conducting marine biology, geology, chemistry, and oceanographic studies.
Philippine authorities emphasized that China has not been granted permission to conduct marine scientific research within the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone (EEZ).
The patrol flight was also challenged by Chinese military forces over radio communications, but the PCG maintained that its mission was a lawful maritime awareness operation conducted in accordance with international law and the 2016 arbitral ruling on the South China Sea.
Authorities continue to monitor Chinese activities around Panatag Shoal, including the presence of buoys, communication equipment, and a floating barrier previously documented in the area.
While the floating platform has already been removed, Philippine officials remain concerned about ongoing research activities and the possible uses of any data collected. The government has called for greater transparency regarding the purpose and results of these operations within waters claimed by the Philippines.
