Philippines accuses China of escalating tensions in West Philippine Sea

Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) spokesperson Rear Admiral Jay Tarriela strongly refuted Chinese Ambassador Jing Quan's claim that Philippine activities are causing tensions in the West Philippine Sea.

Tarriela asserted that China's maritime actions, including the deployment of vessels in the Philippines' exclusive economic zone, are the primary cause of repeated confrontations in the area.

He emphasized that China's reclamation and militarization of South China Sea features, such as Mischief Reef, along with the presence of Chinese maritime forces, are the real drivers of tension.

The exchange came after a confrontation near BRP Sierra Madre at Ayungin Shoal, where Chinese Coast Guard personnel allegedly assaulted Filipino servicemen with wooden batons, leaving two injured.

Tarriela questioned China's criticism of Philippine activities involving the BRP Sierra Madre, which has been stationed at Ayungin Shoal since 1999.

He highlighted China's illegal actions, including the construction on the grounded Philippine Navy ship, and called for diplomatic engagement to resolve disputes.

The incident underscores ongoing tensions between the Philippines and China over territorial claims in the South China Sea, with both sides accusing each other of provocative actions.
