President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.announced that the Philippines and Japan are set to elevate their bilateral relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, marking the highest level in the Philippines' diplomatic framework.

Speaking before members of the Japanese House of Councillors in Tokyo, Marcos emphasized that the move reflects the strong trust and shared values between the two countries, especially at a time of increasing global uncertainty.

He highlighted that both nations, as maritime democracies, share a common commitment to maintaining a free, open, and rules-based Indo-Pacific region where maritime security is a key priority.

Marcos noted that the Philippines and Japan are commemorating 70 years of diplomatic relations this year, describing it as a milestone symbolizing reconciliation, trust, and shared purpose.He stressed that deeper engagement between like-minded partners is necessary to address emerging regional and global challenges.

He also underscored the importance of strengthening defense and security cooperation, citing existing agreements such as the Reciprocal Access Agreement and the Acquisition and Cross-Servicing Agreement, which enhance military interoperability and coordination.

The President added that Japan's Official Security Assistance program continues to support the Philippines' maritime domain awareness and security capabilities.

Beyond defense, Marcos highlighted expanding economic cooperation, noting Japan's continued role as one of the Philippines' top partners in trade and investment.He also pointed to potential collaboration in clean energy, digital transformation, artificial intelligence, critical minerals, and space technology.

According to Marcos, these developments reflect a growing and multidimensional partnership aimed at promoting regional stability, economic resilience, and shared development goals.
