President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.has summoned Chinese Ambassador Jing Quan to Malacañang following a reported clash between Chinese Coast Guard personnel and a Philippine Navy officer at Ayungin Shoal.

The incident, which occurred on Monday, involved the Navy officer sustaining a head injury after allegedly being struck with a wooden baton by Chinese Coast Guard members within the Philippines' exclusive economic zone.The Marcos administration condemned the attack, emphasizing that any assertion of rights should not involve violence.Additionally, Marcos criticized an AI-generated video by Chinese state media depicting Filipinos as monkeys, which was posted on July 10.The Philippines is also navigating tensions over the 2016 arbitral ruling that invalidated China's South China Sea claims.While the government maintains a diplomatic approach, the incident highlights ongoing disputes in the region.The Palace has not yet commented on the summons, but the meeting is scheduled for 5 p.m.on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Beijing has also summoned the Philippine ambassador to China over the same incident, underscoring the complex geopolitical dynamics at play.
