Philippines Expands Digital Learning Access via UNESCO Partnership

The Philippines has joined the UNESCO-UNICEF Gateways to Public Digital Learning Initiative, gaining access to an international network supporting public digital learning platforms.Commission on Higher Education (CHED) Chairperson Shirley Agrupis announced this during the Transforming Education Summit +4 at UNESCO headquarters.

The initiative, launched in 2022, helps member countries develop and strengthen digital learning platforms through technical assistance and collaboration with over 30 nations.

Agrupis highlighted the Philippines' high digital engagement but emphasized the need to ensure connectivity translates to better learning outcomes.With over 2,300 higher education institutions across 7,600 islands, digital learning is critical for expanding access.CHED cited initiatives like expanding fiber/satellite internet, Smart Campus grants, AI training for faculty, and free digital libraries.

The partnership aims to learn from member states on content governance and evaluate digital education investments' impact, particularly benefiting remote areas.This collaboration strengthens ties with government agencies, universities, and private sectors to enhance digital learning opportunities.
