PNP deploys over 6,000 police officers as Senate prepares for Sara Duterte impeachment trial

The Philippine National Police–National Capital Region Police Office (PNP-NCRPO) announced that more than 6,000 police officers will be deployed around the Senate on July 6 to maintain peace and order during the start of Vice President Sara Duterte's impeachment trial.

Authorities expect protest activities near the Senate, with most demonstrators likely to gather in front of the building while at least one group plans to march from a nearby location.

Although no rally permits had been approved as of Sunday, police said they remain open to coordinating with groups that intend to hold lawful demonstrations.

PNP-NCRPO spokesperson Police Major Hazel Asilo said officers will observe the principle of maximum tolerance, prioritising dialogue and negotiation should protesters attempt to move closer to restricted areas, while public order units remain on standby if needed. The police added that they are prepared for any security situation even though the expected number of protesters has not yet been determined.

The impeachment case stems from the House of Representatives' decision to impeach Duterte over allegations that include culpable violation of the Constitution, graft and corruption, bribery, betrayal of public trust, and other high crimes.Duterte's legal team previously filed its response to the Articles of Impeachment and requested the impeachment court to dismiss the case. The trial is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.on Monday, with hearings initially taking place every Monday to Wednesday until after President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.'s State of the Nation Address, after which sessions will shift to Tuesdays through Thursdays.

Meanwhile, Pasay City will implement temporary road closures along Diokno Boulevard near the Senate during hearing days to manage traffic and security.

Security has also been strengthened at the Sandiganbayan and the Office of the Ombudsman following developments involving Senator Rodante Marcoleta, including the filing of a plunder case and the possibility of an arrest warrant.
