The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) has released additional details regarding a police shooting that occurred near the town of Irricana, Alberta, on July 3, 2026.Two RCMP officers responded to a domestic disturbance call at a rural home, where a woman reported her boyfriend was involved in a conflict.Upon arrival, officers heard yelling and a woman exited the residence, but the individual inside did not respond to their calls.Moments later, a man emerged holding what appeared to be a handgun.During the encounter, one officer fired multiple shots, striking the man, who later died at the scene.Paramedics confirmed his death, and the incident was recorded on the officers' body cameras.Neither officer was injured.
ASIRT is conducting an independent investigation to assess the appropriateness of the use of force, while the RCMP has launched an internal review to examine police response, training, policy, and the officer's duty status.The area near Irricana was cordoned off, and the St.Albert Regional Air Ambulance responded but did not transport anyone.The case highlights ongoing scrutiny of police conduct in domestic situations and the procedural protocols followed during such incidents.
