Trump Faces Significant Drop in Approval Among Young Male Voters
A new Emerson College poll released just days before California’s gubernatorial primary shows former state Attorney General Xavier Becerra strengthening his lead in a competitive race.
Becerra, a Democrat, holds 28% support among likely voters, marking a notable increase of nine percentage points compared to earlier polling in mid-May.
Close behind are fellow Democrat Tom Steyer at 22% and Republican Steve Hilton at 21%, indicating a tightly contested battle for the top two spots needed to advance to the general election. The poll highlights shifting dynamics among key voter groups.Becerra has expanded his base, securing strong backing from Democrats (44%), Hispanic voters (36%), and women (36%).
Meanwhile, Hilton has consolidated Republican support, capturing 59% of GOP voters compared to 29% for Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco, who trails overall with 12%.Steyer shows particular strength among younger voters under 30, where he leads with 36%, and maintains moderate support among white voters.
Other candidates lag significantly, with Democrat Katie Porter and San José Mayor Matt Mahan each receiving 5%, both seeing declines since earlier polling.
The survey also suggests that most voters have largely made up their minds: about 75% say they are firmly committed to their chosen candidate, while only a quarter remain open to changing their vote.A small portion, about 4%, remain undecided. The results suggest that the race for a general election spot remains fluid, especially between Steyer and Hilton.
Analysts note that Hilton could benefit if Bianco’s support weakens further, while Steyer’s chances depend on mobilizing younger voters and preventing further gains by Becerra. The survey was conducted May 27–28 among 1,000 likely voters, offering one of the final snapshots before the primary vote.
