Prime Minister orders crackdown on corruption and recovery of misused public funds in Manyoni

Tanzania’s Prime Minister Dr Mwigulu Nchemba has announced strong government action against corruption, ordering immediate investigations, arrests, and disciplinary measures following alleged embezzlement of over 501 million Tanzanian shillings in Manyoni District Council, Singida Region.

The directive was issued during a public rally held at Tambukareli grounds in Manyoni District, where he warned public officials involved in financial misconduct that they will face legal prosecution and administrative consequences regardless of their position or transfers to other regions.

According to reports presented to the Prime Minister, the alleged fraud involved systematic withdrawals from several district council accounts, including more than 213 million shillings from a development account, over 259 million shillings from a deposit account, and an additional 42 million shillings from internal revenue funds.

These funds were originally allocated for key development projects such as the construction of an administration building, completion of the District Executive Director’s residence, and other essential infrastructure.

Dr Nchemba emphasized that the stolen money must be recovered and that all implicated officials should be suspended immediately while disciplinary processes continue. He instructed the Office of the Prime Minister responsible for Regional Administration and Local Government to take swift action without delay.

The Prime Minister praised regional authorities in Singida for uncovering the alleged corruption and commended transparency efforts by district officials who exposed the scheme.

He also highlighted the broader impact of corruption on ordinary citizens, noting that diverted public funds directly affect access to essential services like healthcare, education, clean water, and local development.

During his visit, he also inspected development projects in the region, including a cashew processing facility and a major water supply project in Manyoni Town, which is nearing completion and expected to significantly improve access to clean water for more than 64,000 residents. The government reaffirmed its commitment to accountability and ensuring that public resources are used for the benefit of Tanzanians.
