Private jet lands on Asaba road after aborted approach – NSIB

A private jet operated by VMO Aero Limited landed on a construction road near Asaba Airport instead of the designated runway after an aborted approach.

The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) revealed that the Bombardier Challenger 601-3A aircraft, registered as N989BC, was cleared to land at Asaba Airport but failed to touch down on Runway 11.The crew reported navigation indications showed they were on the RNAV Runway 11 approach, but the plane landed on a nearby road under construction.Seven people were on board, including four crew members and three passengers, with no injuries reported. The aircraft was shut down and inspected after landing, then returned to Lagos without further issues. The NSIB preliminary report noted damage to the left nose-wheel assembly and mentioned technical examinations are ongoing.

Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo clarified the incident wasn't due to mechanical failure but a pilot error, as the pilots mistook the road for a runway. The control tower lost visual contact with the aircraft after landing clearance and later discovered it had landed on the construction site.Keyamo emphasized the incident is now a security concern, with agencies investigating further. The event highlights aviation safety protocols and the importance of accurate runway identification.
