A Los Angeles County Department of Public Health survey found that residents living near the fire-damaged Lineage Logistics cold-storage warehouse in Boyle Heights continue to face significant environmental and health concerns caused by millions of pounds of rotting food left inside the facility.

Conducted on July 15 and 16, the door-to-door survey reached 650 households, with 240 residents completing questionnaires about ongoing conditions following the warehouse fire.

The overwhelming majority of respondents described the odors as very strong, frequent, and persistent, with 90% reporting that the smell was constant.Public health workers conducting the survey also confirmed experiencing strong odors during their visits.

Residents expressed serious concerns about the impact on their health, with many citing worries about air quality, respiratory symptoms, and access to medical care.Reported symptoms included irritated eyes, headaches, breathing difficulties, and stomach problems.In addition to the odor, residents reported a noticeable increase in flies and rodents, further affecting quality of life in the neighborhood.

Local authorities have responded by citing Lineage Logistics for unsanitary and nuisance conditions, requiring the company to remove the remaining rotting food, eliminate fly breeding areas, implement pest-control measures, and prevent insects from spreading into nearby communities.The South Coast Air Quality Management District has also issued separate violations related to the persistent odors.Cleanup efforts are underway under a deadline established by Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, requiring waste removal to be completed by mid-August.

The survey results provide official documentation of the extent of community complaints and reinforce ongoing public health concerns surrounding the aftermath of the warehouse fire.
