Observers react to Donald Trump’s appearance and stamina during G7 Summit in France
MSNBC host Rachel Maddow devoted a segment of her program to examining the continued closure of the Gordie Howe International Bridge, a major infrastructure project connecting Detroit, Michigan, and Windsor, Ontario.
According to Maddow, the bridge has been fully completed, financed, and prepared for operation, yet it remains unopened because President Donald Trump has refused to authorize its opening. The bridge is expected to become one of the largest and most important trade crossings between the United States and Canada.
Maddow highlighted the Trump administration's position that Canada should allow the United States to claim joint ownership of the bridge before it begins operation. She also criticized the White House's argument that the president cannot have a conflict of interest simply because he is president.
A central focus of her report was the potential impact of the new crossing on the nearby Ambassador Bridge, an older privately owned toll bridge controlled by the wealthy Maroun family.Maddow noted that the Ambassador Bridge could lose traffic and revenue once the new bridge opens due to increased competition.
She further pointed to reports that the Maroun family donated $1 million to a pro-Trump super PAC earlier in 2026 and later secured a meeting with Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick.
Maddow suggested that the timing of these events raises questions because Trump subsequently began expressing opposition to the Gordie Howe Bridge despite previously supporting the project.
Although the White House and the super PAC have denied any connection between the donation and the administration's actions, Maddow argued that the sequence of events warrants scrutiny. As of June 2026, she noted, the bridge remains closed despite being completed and ready for use.
