Replica Mosque Placed on Loyalist Bonfire in Northern Ireland Sparks Condemnation and Arrest

A replica of a mosque has been placed atop a large loyalist bonfire in the village of Moygashel, County Tyrone, Northern Ireland, ahead of traditional Eleventh Night commemorations.

The structure, built from wooden pallets and due to be lit on Friday night, also features signs reading 'Secure our borders' and 'End the threat of radical Islam'.

The display has drawn widespread condemnation from politicians across parties, Amnesty International, and community leaders, who describe it as a vile and blatant attempt to stir up anti-Muslim hatred and intimidate Muslim families living in the area.

Northern Ireland Secretary Hilary Benn called the act a 'sickening and cowardly act of intimidation' that does not represent the majority of people in Northern Ireland.Amnesty International's Northern Ireland director, Patrick Corrigan, urged police to investigate it as a potential crime of incitement to hatred.

The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) has arrested a 56-year-old man on suspicion of displaying material intended to stir up hatred under public order legislation. He remains in custody.

This incident occurs against a backdrop of recent anti-immigration tensions in the region and previous controversies at the same bonfire site, including last year's effigies of migrants.

Critics argue that while bonfires are part of cultural traditions marking the Battle of the Boyne, using them to target specific religious or ethnic groups crosses into hate speech and should not be tolerated.Local councillors from Alliance, Sinn Féin, and the SDLP have also called for the immediate removal of the effigy.
