Beyond its role in metabolism, TNAP is essential for bone mineralization, and mutations reducing its activity can cause hypophosphatasia, a rare disorder characterized by weak bones and skeletal abnormalities.

By studying TNAP mutations, the team found that this fat-burning switch also directly influences bone-forming cells, suggesting potential therapeutic strategies to enhance bone strength.
