Researchers Identify Statistical Chemical Patterns That May Indicate Extraterrestrial Life

Researchers at the University of California - Riverside have developed a new statistical approach to detect potential extraterrestrial life.Instead of focusing on specific molecules, the team analyzed patterns in the distribution of amino acids and fatty acids, discovering that biological systems leave behind unique organizational signatures that differ from nonliving chemistry.

Using data from microbes, soils, fossils, meteorites, asteroids, and lab simulations, they found that amino acids in living systems are more diverse and evenly distributed, while fatty acids in nonliving systems show higher uniformity.

This method allowed them to distinguish between biological and nonbiological samples, even when the samples were degraded, such as fossilized dinosaur eggshells. The researchers adapted metrics from ecology, like species richness and evenness, to chemical datasets, creating a novel tool for astrobiology.

While this statistical framework alone cannot confirm life, it provides an additional line of evidence for current and future planetary missions, complementing other detection techniques.

The study emphasizes the importance of multiple converging methods when searching for signs of life beyond Earth and highlights how hidden chemical organization can reveal biological activity, potentially reshaping how scientists interpret organic chemistry on other worlds.
