Restoration work in Victoria uncovers historic Hudson’s Bay warehouse wall artifacts

During restoration work beneath Wharf Street in Victoria, British Columbia, crews uncovered a sealed subterranean chamber linked to one of the city’s oldest colonial structures.

The discovery was made while reinforcing a stone wall that once formed part of a Hudson’s Bay warehouse built in 1859, a key hub in the early commercial development of the region when goods moved between dockyards and Fort Victoria.

Workers from Heritage Masonry and Conservation opened a previously sealed doorway, revealing a hidden space filled largely with construction debris, discarded materials, and everyday waste left behind over decades, including cigarette packs, glass, and old cans.

Amid the rubble, the team discovered decorative stone rosettes originating from the Turner Beeton warehouse, which once stood beside the Hudson’s Bay building before its demolition.Recognising their historical significance, the restoration crew decided to preserve the artefacts.

Two rosettes were placed back inside the chamber as part of a modern time capsule, accompanied by currency, photographs, architectural plans, a copy of the Times Colonist newspaper, and documentation of the restoration project and the people involved.Additional rosettes will be donated to the Victoria city archives for preservation and study.

Local historian John Adams, who had explored the sealed chamber as a child decades earlier, reflected on its historical value and the importance of preserving such remnants of Victoria’s colonial past. The stone wall itself remains one of the last surviving elements of the original warehouse complex, which was partially demolished in the 1930s.

The project highlights ongoing efforts in Victoria to conserve built heritage while revealing forgotten layers of the city’s history hidden beneath modern infrastructure.
