In 1973, Rick Steves embarked on a transformative journey that would shape his future career and lifelong passion for travel.Freshly graduated from Edmonds High School in Washington, Steves left for Europe the day after graduation with little more than a ten-week Eurail pass, a large backpack filled with unnecessary items, and a budget of only $3 per day.This first solo trip, taken without parental supervision or a safety net, introduced him to the thrills and challenges of independent travel.Steves recalls returning home with minimal funds and a malnourished body, but a deep and enduring love for Europe.

This journey became the foundation for his later endeavors, including his guidebooks, PBS travel series, and tour company, all of which emphasize immersive, budget-conscious travel.

Over his adult life, Steves has spent approximately 120 days a year in Europe, living much of it out of a suitcase, demonstrating the long-term impact of this formative experience.
