Canberra forward Riley Hamilton is set to fulfil a childhood dream by making his AFL debut for the GWS Giants at Manuka Oval, in front of a strong home crowd and a large family contingent.

The 19-year-old, a former Ainslie Tricolours player, has earned his opportunity after an impressive VFL season where he kicked 26 goals from 12 games.

His path to the elite level has been marked by setbacks, including being overlooked in his draft year due to a serious anterior cruciate ligament injury.

Despite this, Hamilton has worked his way back through the Giants’ academy system and VFL program to secure a category B rookie spot and ultimately a senior debut.Football runs strongly in the Hamilton family.Riley follows his older sisters Cynthia and Alexia Hamilton, who both play AFLW for the Sydney Swans, with Cynthia also serving as vice-captain.Another sister, Billie, is seen as an emerging talent, while Jayde has already achieved success in AFL Canberra.

The family has been heavily involved in supporting Riley’s debut, with his parents organising dozens of tickets for friends and relatives to attend the match, highlighting the significance of the occasion.

The story also features fellow GWS player Logan Smith, who has endured a difficult journey marked by serious health issues and injuries, including infections, a blood clot, and ongoing knee problems.
