Florida Governor Ron DeSantis faced swift criticism after resharing a post that incorrectly claimed an English pub established in 560 AD would have its insignia in German if not for America.

The post, from an account named 'No Context Brits', included a photo of The Old Ferry Boat Inn in Hollywell and stated, 'America is 250 years old.This pub is 1,466 years old.

' DeSantis added, 'And if it wasn’t for America, the insignia on the pub would be written in German,' a comment that drew backlash for its historical inaccuracies.A Community Note attached to his post highlighted that Germany lost the Battle of Britain in 1940 before the U.S.joined World War II, and that Hitler lacked the resources to invade Britain.

Conservative columnist David French of The New York Times also criticized DeSantis, noting Britain's sacrifices during World War I and its defense of the free world while the U.S.was isolated.The incident underscores growing scrutiny of political figures' historical claims and their potential to spark controversy.
