Russell Henley wins Charles Schwab Classic in playoff after late surge at Colonial

Russell Henley captured the Charles Schwab Classic at Colonial in dramatic fashion, defeating Eric Cole in a playoff after a strong late comeback.Henley birdied the final three holes of regulation to erase the deficit and force extra holes, eventually securing his sixth PGA Tour title.

On the first playoff hole, played again on the 18th, Henley calmly rolled in a five-foot birdie putt to clinch the victory and deny Cole his first PGA Tour win.The tournament featured shifting momentum throughout the final round.

Henley began aggressively with an eagle on the opening hole and a birdie on the second, but quickly lost ground with three consecutive bogeys across holes three to five in the challenging “Horrible Horseshoe” stretch at Colonial. He rebounded later with clutch putts on the 16th and 17th holes, setting up his dramatic finish at the 18th to reach 12 under and force a playoff.

Eric Cole, competing in his 120th PGA Tour start, held the lead for much of the final round and showed resilience under pressure despite a costly double bogey earlier in the round.

However, he could not convert key opportunities down the stretch and ultimately missed a 13-foot birdie putt in the playoff after finding the fairway off the tee.

Cole finished tied for second alongside Alex Smalley and Mac Meissner, while defending champion Ben Griffin narrowly missed becoming only the second player in history to win consecutive titles at Colonial, finishing one stroke back.Henley earned US$1.78 million, along with the plaid winner’s jacket and a customised 1982 Jeep Scrambler.
