Sadiq Khan among 16 Labour nominees appointed to the House of Lords in Keir Starmer's final peerage list

London Mayor Sir Sadiq Khan has been nominated for a life peerage as part of Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer's latest honours list, announced shortly before his departure from Downing Street.

Khan is one of 16 Labour nominees joining the House of Lords, alongside figures including broadcaster June Sarpong, former UNISON general secretary Christina McAnea and several individuals recognised for contributions to public service, law, business and the voluntary sector. The wider list also includes five Liberal Democrat nominees, three Conservatives and two crossbench peers.

Despite becoming a member of the House of Lords, Sir Sadiq is expected to remain Mayor of London and will not take up a ministerial role under the incoming Prime Minister, Andy Burnham.Questions remain over whether he will claim the daily attendance allowance available to peers or donate it to charity. His office stated that his priority remains serving London and continuing work on making the capital fairer, safer and greener. The appointments have prompted renewed debate over reform of the House of Lords.

Andy Burnham has previously argued that the unelected upper chamber should be replaced or significantly reformed, while campaign groups criticised the continued expansion of its membership.

The Electoral Reform Society said the latest appointments appeared inconsistent with Labour's previous commitment to reducing the size of the Lords and making it more representative.

The peerage list is separate from any potential resignation honours list, which Sir Keir has previously indicated he would not issue despite the long-standing convention followed by many departing prime ministers.
