Photographer Sandile Ndlovu has been honored as the Standard Bank Sikuvile Journalist of the Year 2026 for his impactful photo essays that highlight resilience, hope, and the lives of ordinary South Africans.

The award, presented at the prestigious Sikuvile Journalism Awards in Johannesburg, marks Ndlovu as only the second photographer to achieve this distinction in the event's 16-year history.

His work, including projects like 'Mthwalume Brass Band' and 'The Skater,' showcases themes of perseverance and human strength amid challenging circumstances.

Ndlovu emphasized his commitment to spotlighting overlooked communities through authentic storytelling, noting that documentary photography requires patience and dedication.

Judges praised his ability to convey complete narratives through visuals alone, with 'The Skater' taking three years to complete after reconnecting with the subject.

Arena Holdings CEO Pule Molebeledi and Sunday Times editor Mike Siluma highlighted Ndlovu's contributions to quality journalism, while Ndlovu himself urged young journalists to focus on truthful storytelling rather than chasing accolades.His achievement underscores the importance of journalism in documenting South Africa's social realities with dignity and honesty.
