Texas Republican voter says Trump endorsement pushed him to support John Cornyn over Ken Paxton
Senator John Curtis (R-UT) has expressed concerns regarding two of former President Donald Trump’s controversial ambassadorial nominees, Kari Lake and Doug Mastriano.
Curtis, who serves on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, told Punchbowl News that his 'radar is up' due to their history of challenging election results.
Lake, nominated for ambassador to Jamaica, previously refused to concede her 2022 gubernatorial race in Arizona and denied the 2020 presidential election results. Her leadership of Voice of America involved mass layoffs later deemed unlawful by a federal court.
Mastriano, nominated for ambassador to Slovakia, was present outside the Capitol during the January 6, 2021, insurrection and has also sought to overturn the 2020 election.Curtis emphasized that while his initial impressions are critical, he remains open to hearing the nominees' perspectives on the role. Both nominations face additional hurdles, as other Republican senators, including Thom Tillis (R-NC), have indicated potential opposition.
Since a single GOP 'no' vote can deadlock the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and four 'no' votes on the Senate floor can block confirmation, the nominations are at serious risk.Curtis’s scrutiny signals potential challenges ahead for Trump’s controversial selections for ambassador posts.
