Senate grants extension for Vice President Sara Duterte to file impeachment response until Monday
Senator Panfilo “Ping” Lacson has confirmed that efforts are underway within the Senate to replace the current leadership, following recent political developments tied to the chamber’s role as an impeachment court.
Speaking in a radio interview, Lacson said there is a coordinated move among a bloc of senators to replace Senate President Alan Peter Cayetano with Senator Sherwin Gatchalian, whom they describe as a “fresh start” for the chamber.
He noted that the group, composed of around 11 senators from the minority bloc, believes Gatchalian is a neutral figure who can unify members from different political sides and help restore stability in the Senate.
Lacson explained that the push gained momentum after changes in voting dynamics within the chamber, and he emphasized that the group views Gatchalian as a practical and acceptable choice.
He also clarified that while discussions are ongoing, he cannot disclose whether more senators are being engaged, citing the sensitivity of the matter.
He stressed that the leadership change is not intended to influence the impeachment proceedings involving Vice President Sara Duterte, but acknowledged that Senate leadership is crucial since the Senate President presides over the impeachment court.
The senator added that a leadership transition could lead to changes in committee chairmanships, potentially delaying legislative work as roles are reorganized.
Meanwhile, House prosecution spokesperson Zia Alonto Adiong said that any internal changes in Senate leadership would not affect the evidence to be presented by the House in the impeachment trial, emphasizing respect for the Senate’s institutional independence.Other senators, including Imee Marcos, have also raised related policy and oversight concerns during the same period. The impeachment trial of Vice President Duterte is expected to proceed in July, with the Senate currently serving as the impeachment court.Despite political maneuvering, both chambers have stated readiness to proceed with constitutional processes and maintain institutional functions.
