Senior crime intelligence investigator Col Ismail Dawood is set to surrender to police amid allegations of extortion and assault related to a R3.5m debt dispute.His lawyer, Adv Piet du Plessis, confirmed Dawood will appear at Hillbrow police station on Tuesday to surrender and seek bail.

The case, dating back to March 2025, involves claims that Dawood extorted repayment of funds owed to individuals who invested in his family's ventures.

Legal documents submitted by Dawood's team referenced jurisdictional issues in the prosecution manual, suggesting the complainant may have filed a criminal case to avoid civil obligations.

Dawood denied assaulting the complainant, stating he acted within his rights to recover debts and that the complainant used police connections to initiate the case.Despite presenting himself at Sandton police station on Monday, Dawood was not there and left with his legal representative.

The case highlights tensions between private debt recovery and criminal prosecution, raising questions about the misuse of police resources for personal financial disputes.
