Ekurhuleni officials face corruption charges over fraudulent salary increments and disciplinary obstruction
Four senior municipal officials, including former Ekurhuleni City Manager Imogen Mashazi and suspended EMPD acting chief Julius Mkhwanazi, are facing fraud, corruption, and defeating the ends of justice charges linked to a scandal involving unlawful vehicle registrations.
The case centres on businessman Vusimuzi 'Cat' Matlala, whose private vehicles were unlawfully registered as EMPD units and fitted with blue lights, enabling him to evade law enforcement while engaging in alleged criminal activities.
SAPS investigations revealed that Mkhwanazi was protected from disciplinary action after the unlawful registrations, with officials allegedly shielding him by lifting his suspension and ordering the withdrawal of a case.
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) confirmed charges related to promotions and appointments within the municipality, emphasizing the need for swift resolution. While Mkhwanazi and Kemi Behari received bail, Mashazi and Linda Gxasheka remained in custody pending further verification.SAPS warned that civilians using blue lights on private vehicles face legal consequences, underscoring the seriousness of the corruption allegations.
The case highlights systemic issues within local governance and the ongoing challenges in addressing embezzlement and abuse of power in public institutions.
