Siddaramaiah resigns as Karnataka Chief Minister amid Congress leadership transition; D.K. Shivakumar likely successor
In a major development in Karnataka politics, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah tendered his resignation on Thursday, bringing an end to the internal power tussle with his deputy DK Shivakumar.After meeting the Congress high command in Delhi, Siddaramaiah submitted his resignation letter to the Governor's secretary at Karnataka Bhavan.He stated that he resigned because the high command asked him to do so, and he had promised to step down within 48 hours.
The 77-year-old leader, who has been called an 'accidental politician', made it clear that he respectfully declined the Rajya Sabha seat offered to him by the party.
He mentioned that he has two more years as an MLA and will continue serving the people of Karnataka in active politics, fighting for social justice and against communal forces.Siddaramaiah has a long political journey starting from the Janata movement in the 1980s.He later joined Congress in 2006 and became Chief Minister in 2013 and again in 2023.
Known for his welfare schemes and backward class mobilisation through the AHINDA movement, he presented a record 17 state budgets and became the longest-serving CM of Karnataka.
The Congress high command is expected to decide the next Chief Minister soon, with DK Shivakumar being a strong contender after an agreement for power sharing.This leadership change comes after months of speculation and pressure from the DKS camp.Siddaramaiah leaves behind a legacy of OBC leadership and pro-people policies in the state.
