Smith College Taught Freshmen Safe Luggage-Handling Techniques After Train Station Porter Services Ended in 1958

A historical photo feature revisits an unusual physical education class held at Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts, in 1958.The program emerged after nearby railroad stations reduced or eliminated their Redcap porter services, which had traditionally helped travelers carry heavy luggage. As a result, many students, particularly freshmen arriving on campus, suddenly had to manage their own large suitcases and trunks.College officials became concerned that students were carrying their luggage improperly, leading to poor posture and physical strain. In response, Assistant Professor Anne Delano incorporated luggage-handling instruction into freshman physical education classes.

The lessons emphasized proper lifting mechanics, encouraging students to bend their knees, keep their backs straight, and use leg strength rather than placing stress on the spine. The classroom motto, written on a chalkboard, was 'Use Your Head and Save Your Back.' To simulate real travel conditions, students practiced with suitcases loaded with 12-pound weights.Training went beyond lifting and included carrying uneven loads gracefully and placing luggage onto overhead racks safely.

The classes reflected a changing era in which young women were expected to maintain traditional standards of poise while becoming more physically self-reliant.

Photographs taken by LIFE magazine photographer Yale Joel documented the sessions, capturing both the seriousness of the instruction and the students' amusement at the unusual subject matter. One student reportedly questioned the need for such training, suggesting that women could usually find a man willing to help with luggage.

Nevertheless, the images remain a memorable and revealing example of mid-century college life, transportation changes, and evolving expectations surrounding independence and physical fitness.

Funny how colleges once taught basic luggage lifting. Back then they focused on practical skills instead of endless administrative nonsense.

Interesting piece of history. Back then, colleges seemed focused on practical skills and personal responsibility instead of assuming someone else would handle every problem. Teaching students how to lift and carry luggage safely may sound odd today, but it encouraged independence, confidence, and common-sense self-reliance.
