Trump cites scheduling conflicts for missing son’s wedding despite frequent golf trips
The Smithsonian Institution has restored a significant historical detail to the wall text accompanying Donald Trump's portrait at the National Portrait Gallery. The updated description now includes references to Trump's two impeachments during his first term in office.
Initially, the Smithsonian had removed the impeachment information amid tensions with Trump, who had criticized the institution’s portrayal of American history and attempted to exert influence over it.
The original text noted that Trump was impeached for abuse of power and incitement of insurrection following the January 6, 2021, Capitol attack but was acquitted in both Senate trials.
In the updated display, the impeachments are presented alongside other major events from his administration, such as the Abraham Accords, COVID-19 vaccine development through Operation Warp Speed, the January 6 Capitol riot, and the George Floyd protests. While the new format resembles a historical fact sheet and omits details on the reasons behind the impeachments, it maintains the factual record.
Historians monitoring Smithsonian exhibits view the restoration as evidence that the institution resisted pressure from the White House, ensuring that critical historical facts remain documented for public viewing.
