Wife objects to medical treatment for Sonam Wangchuk without consent
Climate activist and educator Sonam Wangchuk was shifted to Safdarjung Hospital by the Delhi Police after his health reportedly deteriorated during his indefinite hunger strike, which entered its 21st day.
According to the Delhi Police, the decision was taken on the advice of medical experts and in compliance with directions of the Delhi High Court to ensure that he received essential medical care.
Police stated that some protesters attempted to obstruct the transfer, resulting in a brief commotion, but maintained that the operation was carried out with restraint. They also confirmed that Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) founder Abhijeet Dipke had been placed under detention.
CJP leaders, however, alleged that police climbed onto the protest dais, prevented Dipke from returning to the protest site, and used force against student demonstrators, including claims of lathi-charge.
Earlier, Wangchuk had said that he had lost nearly 20% of his body weight during the fast but remained committed to his demand for accountability and justice for students. As concerns over his health increased, the protest at Jantar Mantar drew larger crowds and support from several prominent public figures.
Separately, more than 160 eminent citizens from Assam appealed to Wangchuk to end his indefinite fast, expressing concern for his well-being while criticising the authorities for their response.
The developments also renewed attention on Supreme Court rulings that recognise both the state's constitutional duty to protect the life of a person on an indefinite hunger strike and the individual's fundamental right to peaceful dissent. The protest continued to remain a major focus of public and political attention as events unfolded.
