The Minerals Council South Africa (MCSA) highlighted this issue through three key reports released at a mine modernisation conference, warning that without urgent action, the domestic industry risks falling further behind.

While some companies like African Rainbow Minerals and Gold Fields are implementing innovative solutions such as SmeltDirect and remote underground operations, systemic issues persist.The MCSA CEO emphasized that modernisation is critical for the sector's survival, citing threats from rising power costs and global competition.Despite these challenges, South Africa's vast mineral resources remain a potential economic asset if leveraged through technological upgrades.

However, the country's ability to capitalize on this resource base is undermined by its lag in adopting cutting-edge technologies, raising concerns about long-term competitiveness and sustainability in the industry.
