Axel Rudakubana, the perpetrator of a deadly attack at a Taylor Swift-themed dance class in Southport that killed three children and injured nine others, has been transferred from HMP Belmarsh to Broadmoor, a high-security psychiatric hospital.

The move follows an assessment under the Mental Health Act, as his 52-year prison sentence cannot be enforced due to his age at the time of the attack.Rudakubana, now 19, was convicted in January 2025 but could not receive a whole-life order.The Ministry of Justice confirmed the transfer, emphasizing that his sentence remains unchanged.Broadmoor, which specializes in treating high-risk patients, will house him until he is deemed fit for prison.

The cost of psychiatric care is significantly higher than incarceration, with secure hospital beds costing around £270,000 annually compared to £97,740 for prisons.
