Study Finds Elevated Stress Accumulation at Southern California's Cajon Pass Fault Junction

A recent study published in the Journal of Geophysical Research has identified unusually high levels of accumulated tectonic stress at Cajon Pass, a critical fault junction in Southern California where segments of the San Andreas and San Jacinto fault systems converge.

Located about 50 miles northeast of downtown Los Angeles, the area plays an important role in determining how future earthquakes may propagate through the region's interconnected fault network.

Using computer simulations that reconstructed approximately 1,000 years of earthquake rupture history, researchers estimated current stress levels on several fault segments near Cajon Pass.

The San Jacinto Bernardino segment was found to be carrying the highest stress load, while neighboring segments of the San Andreas Fault also showed elevated levels.According to the study, these values are among the highest reconstructed during the millennium-long period analyzed.

Scientists describe Cajon Pass as a potential 'earthquake gate' because it can either stop an earthquake rupture from spreading or allow it to jump between major fault systems.

If a rupture crosses from one fault system to another, it could trigger a larger and more complex earthquake affecting a wider area of Southern California.The research notes that the San Andreas and San Jacinto fault systems have generated at least 36 earthquakes of magnitude 6.

4 or greater during the past 1,000 years and accommodate most of the tectonic movement between the Pacific and North American plates in Southern California.

While the study does not forecast when a major earthquake will occur, it concludes that stress continues to accumulate across this heavily populated region, emphasizing the importance of monitoring fault interactions and improving earthquake preparedness.
