In a recent development that has raised concerns about police integrity in the Western Cape, the commander of the Swellendam Police Station has been suspended internally this month due to alleged ties to the taxi industry.

According to reports, the officer is believed to be involved as a taxi boss, which is strictly prohibited for members of the South African Police Service (SAPS).

Police management has confirmed that operational duties at the station remain unaffected, with acting arrangements put in place to ensure continued service delivery to the community.

Spokesperson Colonel Andre Traut emphasised that the suspension forms part of an internal process and limited details would be shared at this stage to uphold due process.The station continues to operate normally while processes are underway to strengthen management capacity where needed.Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Police, Ian Cameron, has taken a strong stance on the matter.

He has written to the National Commissioner calling for urgent action, stressing that SAPS members are not allowed to own or operate taxis as it creates clear conflicts of interest.

Cameron highlighted that police cannot effectively combat taxi-related violence, extortion, and organised crime if officers have financial stakes in the industry.He called for not only disciplinary measures but also criminal charges where evidence supports it, including arrests and convictions.

This case comes after earlier revelations in March about several other SAPS officers allegedly involved in the taxi business across the province, including sergeants owning multiple vehicles.Such incidents undermine public trust in law enforcement and highlight ongoing challenges in maintaining accountability within the police force.SAPS has reiterated its commitment to stability and effective policing in the area.
