A recent Social Weather Stations (SWS) survey commissioned by the Stratbase Institute reveals that 45% of Filipinos prefer modernizing the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) over forging new defense agreements.

Conducted from June 20-29, the survey interviewed 1,200 adults nationwide, showing 45% prioritized AFP/PCG modernization, 33% favored reinforcing alliances through military exercises, and 22% supported new defense pacts.Regional breakdowns showed Luzon had the highest support for modernization at 47%, followed by the National Capital Region (NCR) at 46%.The findings align with Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr.'s push to increase defense spending to 4% of GDP.

Stratbase President Victor Andres Manhit emphasized that Filipinos view stronger defense capabilities and allied cooperation as complementary measures to protect maritime rights.

The survey highlights public sentiment prioritizing domestic military strength over international partnerships, reflecting a strategic focus on sovereignty and regional security.
