First Nations leaders in Manitoba are raising urgent concerns about the systemic barriers and discrimination faced by Indigenous patients in the province's healthcare system.

The crisis was brought to light after Little Grand Rapids First Nation Chief Clinton Keeper, a cancer survivor, endured a grueling 13-hour wait for medical care at Winnipeg's Grace Hospital.

Keeper experienced severe pain from complications related to a kidney stone obstruction, yet hospital staff provided only regular-strength Tylenol during his prolonged stay.

The Southern Chiefs' Organization (SCO) reported that Keeper's family had to intervene before he received adequate assistance, highlighting persistent language barriers and cultural insensitivity in healthcare settings.

SCO Grand Chief Jerry Daniels condemned the situation as emblematic of broader failures across Canada, where First Nations citizens often face longer wait times, unfamiliar systems, and systemic discrimination.The organization is calling for 24/7 patient navigators at Manitoba hospitals to address these issues, particularly for non-English speakers.

Manitoba Health Minister Uzoma Asagwara acknowledged the challenges but emphasized ongoing efforts to reduce wait times through staffing increases and partnerships with Indigenous organizations.

However, critics argue that without fundamental systemic reforms, disparities in healthcare access and quality will continue to plague First Nations communities, contributing to a life expectancy gap of 11 years compared to other Manitobans.
