The Tanzania Bureau of Standards (TBS) has intensified operations to combat substandard and unregistered products, destroying 5.6 tonnes of hazardous goods in Mkuranga District.Confiscated items included expired paints, banned cosmetics, and expired food products.
Engineer Cyril Kimario emphasized the risks these goods pose to public health and the economy, noting smuggling through unofficial entry points fuels the issue.TBS conducts routine and surprise inspections to intercept non-compliant products, urging consumers to avoid expired or banned items.
The agency also established reporting mechanisms for citizens to report suspected substandard goods, reinforcing its commitment to market safety and aligning with international trade standards.
This effort underscores Tanzania's broader strategy to strengthen consumer protection frameworks and address challenges posed by counterfeit goods in a rapidly expanding market.
