Tanzania’s Startup Ecosystem: A Long-Term Growth Strategy
Tanzania is set to benefit from a major continental partnership aimed at strengthening digital financial infrastructure across Africa. The collaboration between AfricaNenda Foundation, Equity Group Holdings Plc, and the Gates Foundation seeks to accelerate the development of Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) to modernize Tanzania's financial services sector.
This initiative aligns with the country's efforts to expand its digital payments infrastructure through systems like the Tanzania Instant Payment System (TIPS).
Industry experts highlight that enhanced DPI could improve payment efficiency, reduce transaction costs, and strengthen connectivity between banks, mobile money operators, merchants, and regional markets.
The partnership will initially roll out in Rwanda under President Paul Kagame before expanding to the Democratic Republic of Congo and other African markets.Key areas of focus include interoperable payment systems, digital payment innovation, and cross-border payment ecosystems.Dr.
James Mwangi, appointed Continental Digital Public Infrastructure Champion, will advocate for inclusive financial systems that support regional economic integration.
The initiative aims to address the challenge of 400 million Africans remaining excluded from formal financial systems, emphasizing the need for private sector participation to scale digital solutions effectively.
