Tanzania’s Minister for Natural Resources and Tourism, Pendo Homera, has congratulated South Korea for hosting the upcoming UNESCO World Heritage Committee session, describing the event as an important opportunity to strengthen international cooperation in protecting cultural and natural heritage.

Her message reflects the growing diplomatic relationship between Tanzania and South Korea, particularly in areas related to heritage conservation, tourism, and sustainable development.

The UNESCO World Heritage Committee is responsible for implementing the World Heritage Convention by evaluating new World Heritage Site nominations, monitoring the condition of existing sites, and recommending measures to protect locations considered to have outstanding universal value.

South Korea’s role as host demonstrates its increasing contribution to global heritage conservation and its experience in balancing economic development with the preservation of cultural assets.

For Tanzania, participation in the committee’s work is especially important because the country is home to internationally recognised UNESCO World Heritage Sites such as Serengeti National Park, Ngorongoro Conservation Area, and Stone Town of Zanzibar.

These sites contribute significantly to tourism, which remains one of Tanzania’s key economic sectors through foreign exchange earnings, employment, and investment.

The upcoming committee session is expected to discuss challenges including climate change, sustainable tourism, overtourism, and improved heritage management.

These discussions are directly relevant to Tanzania as it continues to protect its natural and cultural resources while supporting economic growth and local communities.

The meeting will also provide participating countries with an opportunity to exchange knowledge, share best practices, and strengthen international partnerships aimed at safeguarding important heritage sites for future generations.
