Benjamin Mkapa Hospital and Jakaya Kikwete Cardiac Institute have successfully performed life-saving heart surgeries on three Burundian children, marking Tanzania's first paediatric cardiac operations on patients referred from another country.

The procedures, conducted after a medical outreach mission in Burundi, involved correcting congenital heart defects by closing holes in the children's hearts.

This achievement highlights Tanzania's growing expertise in specialised healthcare and its emerging role as a regional medical tourism destination.The collaboration between Tanzanian institutions demonstrates the country's capacity to deliver advanced medical services across East Africa.Five children were initially referred, but only three underwent surgery due to advanced complications in the remaining two.
