Dismas Shida Athanasi, only 14 years old, has become one of the biggest highlights of the TotalEnergies CAF Under-17 Africa Cup of Nations held in Morocco 2026.
He is the youngest player in the tournament and at the same time one of the top scorers, having scored three important goals that helped Tanzania’s U-17 team, known as the Serengeti Boys, reach their first-ever CAF youth final.Tanzania will now face Senegal in the final match in Rabat, a historic opportunity to win their first continental youth title.Athanasi shared that he feels very happy and proud to be part of such a big moment in his first AFCON U-17 tournament.He said he does not feel pressure because he loves football and always plays to help his team, not for individual glory.He emphasized teamwork, unity, and belief in the process as key reasons behind Tanzania’s success in the competition.
Throughout the tournament, Tanzania showed strong mentality, especially in knockout matches where they won two penalty shootouts against Algeria and Egypt.Athanasi praised the coaching staff and teammates for their support, especially in keeping the team calm during high-pressure moments.He also highlighted that the team follows instructions and stays focused on collective goals.
The young midfielder, who can play in multiple attacking positions, said he prefers playing as an attacking midfielder but remains flexible for the team’s needs.He credited his development to the Tanzania Football Federation and Francis Foundation Academy, which helped shape his football journey.His football idol is Eden Hazard, whom he tries to learn from.Looking ahead to the final against Senegal, Athanasi expects a tough match but believes Tanzania can compete strongly if they follow their game plan.
He also encouraged young players across Africa to trust the process, work hard, and believe in themselves while staying disciplined and focused on their dreams.
