TekSavvy, along with other independent internet providers and industry associations, has submitted an application to the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) requesting a reduction in the wholesale internet rates charged to small carriers.

The coalition argues that the current rates, which allow large companies to resell internet over their fibre networks, are 'severely inflated' and prevent independent providers from competing fairly.

They claim that under the existing framework, smaller carriers must either sell services at a loss or set retail prices higher than their larger counterparts.

The group is pushing for the CRTC to reduce the 30% markup on wholesale fibre services to 15%, citing declining costs, operational efficiencies, and the need to support competition.

This comes amid criticism from both big and small carriers regarding the CRTC's wholesale internet framework, which allows large companies to resell fibre internet using rival networks outside their core regions.The CRTC's decision in April to maintain these rates has sparked backlash, with the coalition now urging the regulator to reconsider its stance.The dispute highlights ongoing tensions in the telecommunications sector over fair pricing and market competition.
