Texas Senate Race Between Ken Paxton and James Talarico Raises Financial Concerns for Republicans

The upcoming Texas Senate race between Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton and Democratic state Representative James Talarico is already creating concern among Republican strategists because of the enormous financial demands expected during the campaign.

According to the report, Republicans spent more than $100 million during the primary contest, much of it unsuccessfully supporting longtime Senator John Cornyn against Paxton, who ultimately secured the Republican nomination with former President Donald Trump’s endorsement.Political observers believe the general election could become one of the most expensive Senate races in the country.Republicans are especially worried because Paxton has significantly weaker fundraising numbers compared to Talarico. As of early May, Paxton had raised approximately $7.6 million and retained only about $2.3 million in campaign funds.

Meanwhile, Talarico has already raised more than $40 million during his campaign efforts, and his fundraising accelerated after Paxton’s victory, with reports indicating he collected around $600,000 within two hours following the runoff result.

The financial imbalance has raised fears within Republican circles that national party organizations and major GOP donors may need to divert substantial resources into Texas, potentially weakening Republican competitiveness in other key Senate battlegrounds such as Georgia and Maine. Some Republican donors have expressed uncertainty about fully supporting Paxton because of his controversial political history and legal scandals.George Seay, a longtime ally and donor to Senator Cornyn, acknowledged that Paxton’s nomination makes Texas a more competitive race for Democrats. However, he suggested that fundraising difficulties alone may not determine the election outcome.

The article portrays growing anxiety among Republicans that a traditionally conservative state could become unexpectedly difficult and expensive to defend during the 2026 midterm elections.

Kinda wild seeing Texas turn into a money pit for the GOP. Dropping $100M in the primary just to end up with a weaker fundraiser says a lot. Talarico pulling huge numbers this early shows Dems actually smell an opening, and Republicans know defending Texas could drain resources fast.
