The Doors Perform ‘Hello, I Love You’ on German TV Show Filmed in Frankfurt’s Römerberg (1968)

On September 13, 1968, during their first and only European tour, The Doors recorded a televised performance for the German music program “4-3-2-1 Hot & Sweet,” part of the “Musik Für Junge Leute” series.

The segment was filmed outdoors in Frankfurt, Germany, at the historic Römerberg (Romer Square), giving the performance an unusual open-air setting rather than a traditional studio environment.

The band performed in the middle of a public square, surrounded by historic architecture and passersby, creating a distinctive visual backdrop for the broadcast. The Doors performed a lip-synced version of their then-current hit single “Hello, I Love You,” which had reached number one on the charts.Jim Morrison appeared relaxed and unusually upbeat despite the demands of a grueling tour schedule.

Guitarist Robby Krieger later recalled that Morrison often looked up at the surrounding buildings during the performance, visibly taking in the atmosphere of the square and its architecture. The setting left a strong impression on the band, who felt the broadcast did not fully capture the beauty of the location. The footage is also notable for its intercut scenes of a blonde woman dancing in a miniskirt, widely believed to be hostess Suzanne Doucet.

Keyboardist Ray Manzarek can be seen playing an RMI Electra-piano instead of his more typical Vox Continental or Gibson G-101, reflecting his experimentation during the European tour.

This performance occurred just two days before a troubled Amsterdam concert in which Morrison collapsed on stage after a drug overdose, forcing Manzarek to take over vocal duties. The Frankfurt recording remains a striking historical snapshot of The Doors during a pivotal and turbulent moment in their career.
