Poilievre criticizes Carney’s economic record, calling public perception an ‘illusion’
Three residents continue to live at the Luugat single-room occupancy (SRO) building on Granville Street in Vancouver despite a government-set deadline of June 30 to relocate all tenants.
According to an update from the British Columbia government, as of June 29, three individuals were still residing in the building, although all of them have either accepted or have pending offers for alternative housing.
Officials emphasized that no tenant would be evicted if suitable housing was not immediately available, underscoring a gradual transition approach rather than forced displacement.
Earlier updates from the province indicated that 12 residents remained in the building as of June 1, all of whom were also reported to have accepted or pending housing offers.
The Luugat SRO previously housed approximately 80 residents in the fall of 2025, reflecting a significant reduction in occupancy over time as part of a broader relocation effort. The building itself, located in Vancouver’s Granville Street area, was purchased by the provincial government for $55 million in October 2020.
It was acquired with the intention of providing housing for individuals previously living in encampments, forming part of British Columbia’s broader strategy to address homelessness and expand supportive housing options.
The transition has taken place amid scrutiny of conditions in SRO facilities and broader debates about housing policy in Vancouver’s downtown core, particularly within the Granville entertainment district.
BC Housing also previously denied media requests to film inside the Luugat’s common areas and unoccupied rooms, citing privacy obligations for current residents.
The situation highlights ongoing challenges in balancing tenant relocation, housing availability, and public accountability in government-supported housing initiatives.
